How to check the real mileage of a BMW or MINI

The number on the dashboard is only one of several places a BMW or MINI stores its mileage. Comparing them is one of the most useful checks before you buy.

Where the mileage is stored

Besides the instrument cluster, several control units record mileage-related values. Which ones depends on the model and equipment.

What a mismatch can mean

If stored values disagree, it is worth asking why. A difference can point to tampering, but it can also follow a replaced instrument cluster, a repaired control unit or a software update.

How to check it

• Plug a compatible OBD adapter into the port under the dashboard
• Run the free BimmerInspect inspection
• Open Mileage consistency check to see whether the readings match

Check the paperwork too

Compare the result with service records, inspection certificates and invoices. Wear on the pedals, seats and steering wheel should also fit the mileage.
